.: The Pursuit of Happyness
Honestly, in spite of the terrific performances, this is an excruciating film to sit through. The hero finds success, but at such a cost that the payoff is not equal to the misery we've been through to get there.
I was also dissatisfied with the film's total lack of a philosophical position on the meaning of happiness and opportunity. Were all the interns as badly treated as the film's hero, or was that racism? No clue from the film. Does a well-paying job automatically grant happiness? The high-pressure life of the brokers depicted here looked anything but happy to me. They seemed to have money, but I sure wouldn't have wanted to be one of them. The Pursuit of Money would have been a better title. [ 12.15.06 ]
