.: The DaVinci Code
The popularity of this book is based on the public's undying love for a conspiracy theory, its insatiable thirst for glimpses into secret societies, and its inexplicable conviction that if someone feeds them a lot of semi-obscure facts, they are reading something "smart".
Snark aside, The DaVinci Code is at once well-crafted and poorly written. The plot moves ahead like an arrow, with a cliff-hanger at the end of every chapter. Nothing deep, just a wild ride. Wonderful film material, and if the movie is even half-way competent, it will play to the book's strengths better than the book itself. [ 02.21.06 ]
