Of course I immediately had to check this out, since as soon as I read your article, Donald E. Westlake's novel "Drowned Hopes" sprang to mind. I read it only last year, during one of my occasional sprints through his work. And sure enough, they have it included in their list. Dunno how thorough it is, but it's amusing how many books fit the bill...
